October 22 Skytrain track malfunction the result of contracting out

There were major delays caused by a failure of a critical component of the Expo Line on the morning of Tuesday, October 22. Early reports indicated that the work was done by CUPE 7000 SkyTrain staff are incorrect.

No one single event can cause such a failure—there were many factors that led up to the incident. It is not as simple as one part being installed incorrectly. There is an investigation underway to determine what exactly failed and how to prevent it from happening again.

The faulty power rail replacement on the Expo Line was done by an outside contractor and not by CUPE 7000 SkyTrain maintenance staff. In fact, the SkyTrain staff worked tirelessly throughout the morning on repairs to ensure that service could be restored as fast as possible.

“We take pride in the fact that we operate at over 95% on time performance, a statistic that is hard to rival,” said Bill Magri, President of CUPE 7000.

The members of CUPE 7000 work 24/7, 365 days a day to provide a safe and reliable transportation system to the public.
