CUPE BC supports BCTF fight for public education at rallies

BURNABY - On Tuesday, June 10, CUPE BC Secretary-Treasurer Paul Faoro was invited to speak at a BCTF rally outside the Ministry of Education offices in Victoria.

“I was honoured to accept the invitation to speak on behalf of all 85,000 CUPE members in BC,” said Faoro.  “I thought it was important to reaffirm our message that CUPE stands in 100 percent solidarity with the teachers of BC and with their struggle to achieve a fair and reasonable contract that respects their role and improves classroom conditions for all our kids.”

CUPE releases additional details of tentative provincial framework agreement for K–12 education support workers

BURNABY – On Saturday, June 7, 2014 the K-12 Presidents’ Council and the BC Public School Employers’ Association (BCPSEA) reached a tentative provincial framework agreement.

“We’re pleased to conclude a strong agreement that improves education for students and benefits our 27,000 members,” said K-12 Presidents’ Council Chair Marcel Marsolais.  “This agreement is a significant improvement over our last one since increases are provincially funded and will remove pressure on school boards.”

CUPE reaches tentative provincial agreement for K–12 education support workers

BURNABY – On Saturday, June 7, 2014 the K-12 Presidents’ Council and the BC Public School Employers’ Association (BCPSEA) reached a tentative provincial framework agreement.

“We’re pleased to conclude a strong agreement that improves education for students and benefits our 27,000 members,” said K-12 Presidents’ Council Chair, Marcel Marsolais.

The tentative agreement fits within the provincial government’s current mandate.  Additional details of the agreement will be released tomorrow morning, after the K–12 Presidents’ Council has reviewed it.

Family Fun Day a huge hit with community

The Family Fun Day event celebrating the 40th anniversary of CUPE Local 2081 was a huge hit with the community.

VICTORIA - Close to 350 people helped celebrate CUPE 2081’s 40th anniversary at the Family Fun Day held at Camosun College on May 31, 2014.

“This event was a great way to connect our local and the community,” said CUPE 2081 President Tony Nelson. “I’d like to give a huge shout-out to everyone who helped.”

CUPE 358 sends support to striking Naramata workers

CUPE BC RVP Michelle Waite and 358 President Ron Salvati get ready to donate $500 to striking Naramata workers.

DUNCAN- Members of CUPE 358 in the Cowichan Valley have a long tradition of supporting their communities and their sisters and brothers in need. On May 31, the Local continued that tradition, donating the proceeds of the 50/50 draw that accompanies the annual golf tournament to striking Naramata Centre workers.

CUPE education support workers begin bargaining

BURNABY – CUPE will begin bargaining a new collective agreement this afternoon on behalf of education support workers throughout British Columbia. 

“We are looking to reach a fair and reasonable settlement for our members,” said K-12 sector coordinator Rob Hewitt.

CUPE will exchange proposals with the Public School Employers’ Association (BCPSEA) today.

Hewitt says that funding public education is a top priority for CUPE.

Striking Naramata workers feel the support

NARAMATA – It was a typically beautiful South Okanagan day for a solidarity rally in Naramata on Saturday, May 31.

Speaking to the crowd who had come from all over the Okanagan and the Lower Mainland to show their support for striking Naramata Centre workers, CUPE 608 President Brianne Hillson began by reading letters of support from CUPE National President Paul Moist, COPE 378 President David Black, and CLC President Hassan Yussuff.

White Rock city workers ratify new agreement

WHITE ROCK – CUPE workers ended their month-long job action today, ratifying a new four-year collective agreement.

CUPE 402-01 President Mike Guraliuk said that CUPE members stood together and, in taking historic strike action, made it clear to their employer that they were serious about the issues on the bargaining table.

Tentative agreement reached for White Rock civic workers

WHITE ROCK – The City of White Rock and CUPE workers have reached a tentative agreement.

CUPE 402-01 President Mike Guraliuk said that details of the settlement will be released pending a ratification vote by local members tomorrow (Saturday).

CUPE 402-01 represents 100 City of White Rock workers. The union began job action with an overtime ban, with rotating strikes beginning on May 2.  Full strike action at all city facilities has been ongoing since Monday, May 12.

This is the first time in the history of CUPE 402-01 that the union has taken strike action.
