CULTUS LAKE—CUPE 458 members are sending a strong message to the Park Board. The Cultus Lake park workers voted Thursday evening with 100% voting in favour of a strike.
“We’ve been unable to reach a settlement and are applying for mediation,” says Bryan Bickley, unit chair of CUPE 458’s Cultus Lake Park Board Local. “This is a fairness issue. These workers should be paid the going rate.”
Their contract expired December 31, 2007 and they have been working without a contract for a year a half. The Local represents the working women and men who look after public buildings, maintain all roads and grounds as well as the water and sewage system in Cultus Lake Park. They also maintain a campground of over 600 sites.
“We have a versatile crew that serves our community well,” explains Bickley. Residents appreciate the level of service and expertise that we provide, and we want the Cultus Lake Park Board to do the same.”
The last time the Local exercised their right to strike was in 1996 when their wages were almost $2 behind those of their counterparts.
