Comox Valley municipal workers make the case for more protein at local food bank

COURTENAY – Local 556 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees delivered 70 cases of tinned wild salmon to the Comox Valley Food Bank today.

Unions and community groups have been working together to address the growing number of people in BC who must rely on food banks. Protein for People is a community partnership program designed to address those shortages.

This isn’t the first time Comox Valley municipal workers have provided much needed protein for the food bank. Back in February the local took part in a 12-case donation along with other CUPE locals and the Vancouver Island District Labour Council.

CUPE Local 556 president Karen Garrett points out that 1,200 people a month use the Comox Valley Food Bank and three percent of those are children. “The protein that wild salmon provides is vital,” she says.

Garrett says the food bank was very pleased to get the donation, and encourages other local citizens and groups to do what they can to help out.
