CUPE 387 members support locked out Southern Railway workers

NEW WESTMINSTER—The picket line at the east end of the Southern Railway Trapp Yard was briefly  converted to a pizza party on Wednesday afternoon, with members of New Westminster’s  civic CUPE local bringing food and pop to locked out members of CUPE 7000.

“They’re in our own backyard, and it’s not every day that we see a lockout like this. So of course we have to show our support any way we can,” said CUPE 387 member at large Maiggen Dutka, a maintenance labourer with the City’s engineering department.

CUPE 7000 President Bill Magri thanked the sister CUPE local for its support.

“We’re a big family in CUPE—a family of 630,000 members across this country,” he said. “We come together and get through adverse situations like this through the strength of our solidarity. So your presence here today is a great reminder of that.”
