RICHMOND—Yesterday, Wednesday May 1, marks day ninety of the lockout at Quilchena Golf and Country Club. The groundskeepers (who are represented by CUPE 4964) were locked out by the club’s management February 4 after only nine days of negotiations.
“CUPE 4964 is disappointed that management hasn’t chosen to end this lockout. Several days have been spent negotiating over the past month and we are very close to reaching an agreement,” says CUPE National Representative Tom McKenna. “It’s now been 90 days since the course and the grounds at the course have been properly maintained and with the weather improving and golf season quickly approaching it’s time for CUPE employees to return to work.”
McKenna reports that there are two outstanding issues left to be negotiated by the two parties, the term of the agreement and some language around bargaining unit work.
“There’s no reason for this lockout to continue and management has the power to end this lockout. The best thing for Quilchena members and the course itself is for CUPE employees to be back at work maintaining the course,” adds McKenna.
CUPE 4964 represents 19 workers who maintain and care for the grounds and golf course at the Quilchena Golf and Country Club in Richmond.
