Two Okanagan library branches join CUPE 1123

KELOWNA—Employees at the Oliver and Kaleden Okanagan Regional Library branches have voted in favour of becoming CUPE members.

Oliver workers voted in favour of joining CUPE at the end of last month while Kaleden workers took their vote last week. Library workers at both branches will join CUPE 1123, the local which currently represents frontline staff at 17 ORL branches throughout the Okanagan.

CUPE 1123 president Rose Jurkic says that employees at the two branches felt it was the right time to join CUPE.

“Our last round of negotiations was very difficult, but employees at all ORL branches, unionized or not, saw that CUPE 1123 was committed to representing library workers in a fair and equitable manner,” says Jurkic. “We welcome our newest members to our local and look forward to continuing to provide quality public services at all our branches.”

CUPE 1123 now represents over 170 frontline workers at 19 of 29 ORL branches.
