Day of remembrance and action to end violence against women

BURNABY-On December 6 we remember and mourn the 14 women who were murdered at the École Polytechnique in Montreal in 1989.

CUPE makes its presents known

VANCOUVER - More than 100 CUPE members, ambulance paramedics and community activists were on hand last night to greet Premier Gordon Campbell at his annual Christmas party at the UBC Golf Club. Campbell had to run a gauntlet of protesters with Fight Bill 21 signs to enter the building.

Santas and their elves gave out gift bags with a CUPE first aid kit, Champions of Education bumph and a Campbell cartoon featuring The Grinch Who Stole Collective Bargaining! The Solidarity Notes Choir serenaded B.C.

Victoria Bill 21 Protest Rally Wed. Dec. 2

VICTORIA – The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) is holding a rally at the Oak Bay – Gordon Head office of Liberal MLA Ida Chong Wednesday at 12 Noon. We are calling on the government to respect free collective bargaining and return to the table immediately to negotiate a fair contract with our 3,500 ambulance paramedics.

Island rallies gain momentum

NANAIMO – CUPE members and community supporters on Vancouver Island turned out in full force this week to demand their right to free collective bargaining.

In Courtenay Friday, more than 200 people rallied outside Comox Valley Liberal MLA Don McRae’s constituency office telling the Campbell government to bargain in good faith with the Ambulance Paramedics.

Library board gets an earful from public

VANCOUVER—The message at last night’s Vancouver Public Library (VPL) board meeting was loud and clear: members of the public love their libraries and don’t want to see their cherished services reduced or eliminated to meet the City of Vancouver’s budget shortfalls.

“I was extremely proud of our communities, of how they rose up to defend public libraries,” said CUPE 391 president Alex Youngberg.
