CUPE 1004 workers share their stories about work at PHS

VANCOUVER—CUPE 1004 members who work for the Portland Hotel Society have produced a short video talking about the work they do and why the vision and approach of the PHS has been so successful.

The video was produced following the announcement that PHS will be under the direction of a new board and senior management.

“CUPE members are passionate about maintaining the flexible services and the innovative model that has been developed at PHS and we wanted to share a few stories about what we do and why it matters,” said Andrew Ledger, CUPE 1004 representative.

PHS workers relieved that services are protected, concerned about future

VANCOUVER—CUPE 1004 members who work for the Portland Hotel Society received news that new management will protect services with both relief and concern today.

“CUPE members give a lot of themselves professionally and personally, and feel a deep loyalty and commitment to the PHS and to the work we do. Knowing that the services for our residents and patients will stay in place is important to us. But we feel a huge loss and there is a lot of concern about what the future holds,” said Andrew Ledger, CUPE 1004 representative.

BC community health workers ratify five-year deal

BURNABY - Members of the multi-union Community Health Bargaining Association have voted 78.7% in favour of a new collective agreement.  The five-year deal with the Health Employers’ Association of BC (HEABC) expires on March 31, 2019 and covers over 15,000 workers in community health jobs across the province.  Approximately 1,000 of those workers are CUPE members.

Health science workers ratify 5 year collective agreement

BURNABY - Members of unions represented by the Health Sciences Professionals’ Bargaining Association (HSPBA) have voted to ratify an agreement with the Health Employers’ Association.  The 17,000 members of the bargaining association voted 76 percent in favour of the deal.

“CUPE members voted against this agreement,” said Mark Hancock, President of CUPE BC. “We remain disappointed the deal does not provide a fair wage increase. We are not at all hopeful that the so-called ‘Economic Stability Dividend’ will do anything for our members.”

CUPE Health Care Presidents Council continues to recommend rejection of HSPBA tentative agreement

Despite last-minute amendments to the tentative agreement between the Health Science Professionals Bargaining Association (HSPBA) and the Health Employers Association of BC (HEABC), CUPE’s Health Care Presidents Council continues to recommend members reject the agreement when voting takes place next week.

The Professional Employees Union also continues to recommend that its members reject the tentative agreement.

Five-year tentative agreement reached in community health services

The Community Bargaining Association (CBA) has reached a tentative agreement for the 15,000 union members working in the community health sector across the province.

37.5-hour work week grievances to be addressed with new process

The Health Science Professionals’ Bargaining Association and the employers’ association have agreed to have arbitrator Vince Ready design and arbitrate a process to expedite 37.5-hour work week grievances.

A case management meeting will be scheduled early in the new year, and it is anticipated that hearings will begin shortly thereafter.

CUPE represents over 700 Health Sciences Professionals within Local 15, 1978 and 4816, and is currently case managing over 100 individual grievances related to the implementation of 37.5 hour work weeks and its effects on members.

CUPE Health Care Presidents Council launches “Vote No” campaign

BURNABY—CUPE’s Health Care Presidents Council is urging its members in the sector to reject the tentative agreement between the Health Sciences Professionals Bargaining Association and the Health Employers Association of BC, and is launching a campaign to have members vote “no” in upcoming ratification votes.
