Front-line library workers to hold information picket at opening of Vernon branch

VERNON—CUPE library workers will hold an information picket Saturday morning at the new Vernon Okanagan Regional Library branch. 

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of the Vernon Library which is located at 2800-30th Avenue.

CUPE 1123 president Rose Jurkic says that the information picket will not disrupt the opening of the branch.

Okanagan library workers serve strike notice

KELOWNA—After more than six months of negotiations, library workers in the Okanagan have served notice of their intention to strike and plan to begin withdrawing services this week.

CUPE 1123 has given 72 hour strike notice and will be in a legal strike position at 8:45 a.m. on Thursday, May 3, 2012, unless a deal is reached before then.

The City of Powell River recently announced their proposed 2012 budget which includes cuts that would reduce hours for transit, reduce bylaw enforcement services, cut parks and recreation services and increase water and sewer fees.

Post Secondary Employer Group Abandons Provincial Template Table Negotiations

Following more than two years of protracted negotiations, the Post Secondary Employers Association (PSEA) announced that it is abandoning the Provincial Template Table negotiations, the College and Institute Support Staff Bargaining Association (CISSBA) said today.

The employer group, which represents 9 of 19 college, institute and university employers, cited the potential impact of Provincial Template Table negotiations on other local post secondary tables as a reason for walking away from the negotiations.

Okanagan Library Workers vote in favour of strike

KELOWNA— CUPE library workers in the Okanagan have voted over 96 per cent in favour of a strike.

The strong strike mandate stems from frustration members are feeling about the employer’s unwillingness to negotiate says CUPE 1123 president and bargaining committee member Rose Jurkic.

Negotiations are at a standstill after multiple bargaining sessions and two mediation sessions. The CUPE bargaining committee says that the remaining issues such as wage increases and benefits could be resolved with some cooperation from the employer.

CUPE heads back to bargaining in BC’s colleges sector

In the late spring of 2011, CUPE as part of the Colleges and Institutes Support Staff Bargaining Association (CISSBA), put provincial bargaining on hold to try and make some progress at local tables.
